What happens when a helicopter is still mission-critical, but the original manufacturer no longer supports it?

For CanWest Aerospace, the answer is simple: find a way to keep it flying.

Featured in Vertical Mag, the Langley, B.C.-based company has built its business around maintaining, repairing and modernizing legacy helicopters and other aircraft that are no longer supported by their original equipment manufacturers. With mobile repair teams able to respond around the world, CanWest provides everything from component and avionics repairs to structural work, aircraft rewiring and full modernization.

The company’s expertise is especially valuable for military and specialized aircraft. In one recent project, CanWest completely refurbished and modernized two Bell 212 helicopters for the Bangladesh Air Force, including new mission equipment, search-and-rescue technology and operational consoles. The project involved up to 24,000 hours of work and was completed in just seven months.

CanWest’s approach demonstrates that an aircraft being considered “obsolete” does not necessarily mean it has reached the end of its useful life. By manufacturing hard-to-find parts, upgrading systems and providing specialized maintenance, the company is helping operators extend the life of aircraft that remain valuable and capable.
